CUSTOM TRIAL PROJECT MARCO HÖSEL Marco Hösel ist sechsmaliger Weltmeister und dreifacher Weltcup Sieger im Trial. Und Marco ist ein Kumpel unseres langjährigen Teamfahrers Frank Schneider. Als sich die beiden im letzten Frühjahr mal wieder zum Biken trafen, kam es nach der Tour, wie so oft, zu einer dieser obligatorischen technischen Fachsimpeleien über das ideale Bike. Marcos Problem: Er hatte zwar ganz genaue Vorstellungen, wie ein perfektes Trial-Bike aussehen und abgemessen sein sollte, aber kein Hersteller hat etwas im Angebot, was dem nahe kommt. Schneidi riet ihm also das Naheliegende: sich doch einfach mal an Nicolai zu wenden. Nachdem der Kontakt erst einmal hergestellt war, füllte sich Kalles Schreibtisch schnell mit Skizzen und technischen Erörterungen von Marco an. Es folgte ein ergiebiger konstruktiver Dialog zwischen den beiden, der dazu führte, dass in Marcos Garage jetzt drei Nicolais stehen: ein All-Mountain Trial-Bike auf Helius AM Basis, ein Custom 20-Zoll Trial-Bike und ein maßgeschneidertes BMXTB trial. Ein Trial-Bike ist übrigens weit mehr als nur ein Standardrahmen mit einer besonders flachen Geometrie. Es muss vor allen den speziellen Trial-Komponenten angepasst sein. Trial-Kurbeln z.B haben einen integrierten Freilauf und brauchen dafür ein spezielles Tretlager. Und für Marcos Bikes haben wir auch neue Hollow-Weld-Yokes mit einer Magura ® Direct-Mount-Aufnahme konstruiert. Wir werden vielleicht nur “eine Handvoll“ Trail Rahmen verkaufen, jedoch sind diese Projektbikes das Salz in der Nicolai-Suppe, da solche Entwicklungen das Know-how der Nicolai GMBH erweitern und wir diese Erkenntnisse an anderen Modellen und in der Zukunft positiv nutzen können. Project bikes – custom builts Marco Hösel is six times world champion and has won the Trails world cup three times. Marco is also a buddy of our longtime team rider Frank Schneider. When they both met for riding in spring 2010, as they do every time after a joint tour, they got talking about what they regarded as “the perfect bike”. Marco's problem: he already has fixed ideas about how the perfect trial bike should look, what the angles and dimensions should be, but not a single manufacturer on the planet has his ideal frame in their range. So Frank told him the obvious: contact Karl Nicolai. After the initial contact, Karl's desk started filling up with drawings and technical explanations from Marco. There followed a constructive dialogue between Karl and Marco with the result being three new bikes parked in Marco's garage: an all-mountain trials bike based on a Helius AM, a custom 20” competition trials bike and a custom BMXTB Trials. A trials bike is much more than a frame with a low standover height - it has to be customised in order to allow the fitting of some very specific trials components. Trials crank sets for example, have got an internal free wheel and need a special BB shell. We've also designed new hollow-weld yokes for Marco's bikes with a Magura ® Direct-Mount adapter. We will probably only sell a handful of trials frames like Marco's but project bikes like these are the thing that sets us apart from ohter manufacturers. With evolutions like this we broaden the Nicolai know-how and we are able to use the experience we get from these custom projects for innovations and future models.
